Icelandic Horses & Icelandic Sheepdogs

Colors of Nature

Capturing the wild spirit and unique personalities of Icelandic horses and Icelandic sheepdogs in their natural landscapes.

This moodboard showcases my recent work with dogs and Icelandic horses in natural environments. Each image highlights the animals’ movement, character, and unique essence in harmony with their surroundings. The color, light, and landscape are carefully considered to create images that feel alive and tell a story. The intention of my residency project is to extend this approach in the dramatic landscapes of Iceland; Snæfellsnes, capturing the raw beauty and spirit of Icelandic horses and dogs in their natural habitat, Iceland.

Icelandic horses and Icelandic sheepdogs have always been a source of inspiration for me. I have been fascinated by them since the age of 12 and read everything I could find about them. In 1998, I owned my first Icelandic horse, and in 2000 my first Icelandic sheepdog came into my life. My fascination with Iceland grew from that. Finally, after years of dreaming, I made my first trip to Iceland in 2023. Being in this landscape allows me to connect deeply with the animals and where they come from, what shaped them and capture their personalities in dialogue with the environment. The raw, powerful landscape perfectly complements the wild spirit of Icelandic horses and Icelandic sheepdogs. Working here allows me to capture animals in harmony with their environment, telling visual stories of freedom, strength, and beauty.

Hello Hedi & Birgit,

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Iris van Velzen, I am a Dutch animal photographer, born in 1980, specializing in dogs and Icelandic horses. My work focuses on capturing the character, movement, and essence of animals in their natural environment. I create images that freeze moments of freedom and beauty, transforming them into artworks.

I am passionate about capturing Icelandic horses and Icelandic sheepdogs in their natural habitats. Visiting Iceland in 2023 inspired me to want to return, slow down and take the time to fully immerse myself in observing and photographing these animalsand nature. This residency would be a real honor and a cool oppurtunity and allow me to create meaningful photographs that celebrate their beauty and the beauty of the country share them with a wider audience. Show people how beautiful nature is and how amazing these animals are.
